Interviews

An interview is one participant’s conversation with the agent, from the outreach message to the thank-you. The agent works through the interview guide one question at a time and follows up on each answer. Every interview appears on the study page as INT- followed by its number, with its own summary and grade.

What the participant sees

In a text chat study, the participant opens the study link in a browser and lands in a chat:

• The chat header shows the agent’s name, avatar, and role (by default, “Researcher at” your organization’s public name).
• A notice at the start of the chat reads: “This interview is moderated by AI. Your responses are anonymous, so feel free to share your honest feedback.”
• The first message is the study’s outreach message.
• The participant answers by typing or by recording a voice message. Voice messages are transcribed in the transcript, and you can play the recording.
• For a choice question, the options appear under the agent’s message, and the participant answers by picking one or several.
• Images, a video, or a Figma prototype attached to a guide item for participants appear in the chat when the agent asks about that item. The participant plays the video or explores the prototype in the chat.

In a video study, the participant reads a welcome page, then sees each question on screen and answers it on camera. You watch each answer as a clip with its transcript. See Run a video interview study. The interview runs in the participant’s language when the study supports it. See Supported languages. A participant who closes the tab and opens the link again in the same browser within 30 days returns to the same interview.

How the agent runs an interview

1. It asks about the guide items in order. When the participant brings up a later item on their own, it follows that thread, then returns to the earliest item not yet covered.
2. After each answer, it asks the follow-ups your study depth calls for, one question per message.
3. When every item is covered, or the participant wants to stop, it wraps up and thanks them. If the study offers a reward, the agent asks for a way to reach them just before the wrap-up; see Offer a reward.

A participant can leave at any point. The interview keeps what they said and stays Incomplete.

When an interview counts as complete

An interview is Complete once the participant has answered every guide question and every follow-up the study depth and the item settings call for. The interview already counts as complete when the agent asks for a reward identifier, so the participant doesn’t need to give one or reply to the thank-you. Leaving early, skipping a question, or saying goodbye does not complete an interview. Preview and test-link interviews never count toward a study’s completed interview limit.
